How to Identify Arabia's Classic Collections

Arabia is a cornerstone of Finnish design. Its tableware has been part of Finnish homes for over a hundred years—in everyday life, at celebrations, and now as collectors' treasures. But how can you recognise Arabia's classic collections when browsing flea markets, auctions, or Wintin's selection? Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Arabia has dozens of different collections, but some are particularly well-known and sought after. Ruska is a stoneware collection designed by Kaj Franck, recognisable by its dark, textured glaze. Paratiisi, Birger Kaipia's colourful collection with its rich decoration, is one of Arabia's icons. Kilta, later known as Teema, represents Kaj Franck's pared-back design and clear colours. Collections such as Kaira, Valencia and Kosmos are also known for their hand-painted surfaces in shades of blue, green, and brown.

Arabia's stamps and markings are also an important aid to identification. Older pieces bear the crown stamp and the words “Made in Finland”, while a more modern “ARABIA FINLAND” stamp was used in the 1960s and 1970s. Some collections may also feature the designer's signature or the collection name. However, it's worth remembering that some items were sold with stickers only, so a missing stamp doesn't necessarily mean they're copies.

Materials and colours offer further clues. Stoneware is generally heavier and thicker, while porcelain is lightweight and translucent. Colours reflect the era: brown, green, and orange were popular in the 1960s and 1970s, while later collections featured brighter colours.

For collectors, the best way to learn is to compare different collections and practise spotting details such as the shape of a cup handle or the stamp on the bottom of a bowl. Condition is always an important factor in value—pieces without chips and in good condition are the most sought after. A good rule of thumb is that if an item immediately gives you that familiar “Arabia” feeling, you're probably on the right track.

Arabia's classic collections are much more than tableware—they're part of Finnish cultural history. Once you learn to recognise the stamps, colours, and designs, you'll soon be able to tell Ruska, Paratiisi, and other iconic collections apart.
